AROUND THE FIRE
WHAT WE'VE BEEN UP TO
For the better part of a year, ManScouts lived in notebooks, late-night conversations, and one stubborn belief: that men are missing something the modern world quietly stopped offering, a pack, a purpose, and a place to be fully themselves.
So we got to work. We stress-tested the idea. We listened. We threw out what didn't work and kept sharpening what did. What began as a concept now has real footing, a foundation we're proud to stand on and, more importantly, ready to build on. ManScouts will keep evolving; that's the point. But the groundwork is laid, and for the first time the trail ahead is clearly in view.
Here's what's coming over the ridge:
❋ Virtual Campfire Chats — kicking off September. Twice a month, we gather around the (virtual) fire. These aren't webinars. They're a chance to explore our Landmarks, trade hard-won insight, and lean on the kind of brotherhood that shows up whether you're crushing it or just trying to find your footing. No trail required just sign up on our website and we will send you a link!
The fire's lit. Come find your pack.
LANDMARK OF THE MONTH
THIS MONTH: AGENCY
Each month we put one Landmark under the light — one of the six fixed points we navigate by. This month, we're standing on Agency.
“We move with intention. Paths are chosen, not followed by accident. Each of us takes on the weight of our own decisions, recognizing that we are the masters of our own lives. A man who owns his choices owns his life.”
Some men don't choose their lives. They inherit them. The job you fell into. The routine that hardened around you. The opinions you absorbed without ever deciding you believed them. Drifting is easy; the current does the work. You wake up one day wondering how you got here, and the honest answer is that you didn't get here. You were carried.
Agency is the moment you grab the wheel and say, this path is mine because I chose it, and you stand ready to defend that choice out loud. You don't build that muscle alone. You build it around men who ask the hard question: did you decide this, or did it just happen to you? That's what we're for.
Now, agency isn't the same as control. You don't get to choose all of it. Illness comes without asking. People you love die. The market turns, the body breaks down, the phone rings with news that splits your life into before and after. No amount of grabbing the wheel changes that some roads wash out from under you.
That's where it's easy to fall into a trap. We start thinking agency means bending the world to our will, and when the world refuses, we decide the whole thing was a lie and go back to drifting. But agency was never about the hand you're dealt. It's about how you play it. The one thing that stays yours, always, is your response. What you do with the loss. Whether you meet it standing up or on your knees. Whether you let it harden you into someone bitter or forge you into someone the rest of us can lean on.
So the question isn't only did you choose this path. It's also: when the path chose for you, how did you answer? That's a decision too. Maybe the one that counts most. And it's the one we're here to hold you to..
SKILL OF THE MONTH
THE UPSIDE-DOWN FIRE
Most guys build a fire the way they learned as kids: tinder on the bottom, kindling above, big logs on top. It works: for about ten minutes of constant babysitting. Flip it.
The upside-down (or “top-down”) fire puts your biggest logs on the bottom and builds up to tinder on top. You light it from the top and let it burn downward into the fuel below. Less poking, more presence.
Build it in four layers:
Lay your largest logs side by side on the ground as the base.
Stack smaller logs crossways on top, each layer perpendicular to the last.
Keep going, each layer a little smaller than the one beneath it.
Crown it with kindling, then a nest of dry tinder. Light the top and step back.
Why it works: the flame burns down into the wood, dropping hot coals onto fresh fuel so the fire feeds itself. You get a stable, long-burning base that throws steady heat — perfect for a cold camp or a long conversation. Try it on your next trip and tell us how it held.
FROM THE TRAIL
BACKCOUNTRY DESSERT: NO-COOK “CHEESECAKE”
Some of the best camp memories happen after dinner, when the stove's off and nobody's in a hurry. This one weighs almost nothing, needs no fire, and tastes like you cheated. Prep the dry mix at home; assemble it at camp in about five minutes.
PACK LIST
• 1 box instant cheesecake (or vanilla) pudding mix
• 3 tbsp powdered milk
• 1 sleeve graham crackers (or pre-crushed crumbs)
• A handful of freeze-dried strawberries or blueberries
• Optional: a squeeze packet of honey or jam
At camp: Add roughly a cup of cold water to the bag, seal it, and knead until thick and smooth. Crush a few graham crackers into the bottom of your bowl, squeeze the cheesecake on top, and crumble more grahams and freeze-dried berries over it. Serve to the envy of everyone who packed a granola bar.
WORTH YOUR TIME
BOOK OF THE MONTH: BOWLING ALONE
Bowling Alone by Robert D. Putnam
Putnam's landmark study traces how, over decades, Americans quietly drifted apart, from the clubs, leagues, congregations, and neighbors that once stitched a life together. The title comes from a small, haunting observation: more people bowl than ever, but far fewer bowl in leagues. We traded the team for the solo lane and barely noticed.
It is, essentially, the exact problem ManScouts exists to answer. If you've ever felt the particular loneliness of modern life without quite having words for it, this book hands you the map and makes it obvious why your pack matters. Read it, then bring your thoughts to a Campfire Chat.
